americanLakesSAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – For years, the American Lake Veterans Golf Course (ALVGC) just outside Tacoma, Washington, has made the game more accessible to disabled veterans through its innovative programs.

Recently, they’ve expanded these services by installing a Full Swing Golf virtual golf simulator inside the new $1.3 million Rehabilitation Centre at the American Lake Veterans Golf Course, which opened in April.

"For many of these veterans, American Lake Veterans Golf Course is their only social outlet," says Pepper Roberts, a Korean War veteran and president of the Friends of the ALVGC. “Studies show that engaging in golf can assist disabled veterans learn necessary life skills, both physical and mental, such as balance, coordination, focus and concentration."

Louis Karamon, a World War II Army veteran, is one example. At a recent media event to launch the new rehab centre, he was helped out of his wheelchair and put in a "SoloRider" golf cart that sits directly in the Full Swing Golf simulator—allowing him to hit golf balls into the screen.

Karamon has had several neck injuries, but the Full Swing golf simulator allows him to play without pain.

Roberts says the golf simulator is getting steady use; they are using it mainly for lessons and the driving range feature, but looking ahead, they plan to use it for more events.

“We are starting a tournament for the blind where they can play two to three holes at a time and then save their score to complete a 9 or 18 hole match at a later date,” Roberts explains.

As the worldwide leader in golf simulation, Full Swing Golf features a start-of-the-art infrared tracking system to supply golfers with the most accurate and sophisticated instant feedback in the industry. Full Swing technology provides golfers with an extraordinary experience and precise shot information.

"We are very honored that our golf simulators are giving U.S. veterans a chance to rehabilitate and enjoy the game of golf at the same time," says Brian Arnold, Senior Vice-President of Full Swing Golf. "As more rehabilitation centers install the Full Swing system, participants can compete globally in local, national, and international Online Tournaments - with the potential of having disabled veterans leagues compete on a regular basis."
